The first season of Rey Mysterio vs The Darkness was developed by ¡Viva Calavera! with the help of multiple studios in Latin America, including Kaparasound, LABO, Mighty Animation, Lucy Animation and Formidable. From an original story conceived by Los Hermanos Calavera and Cartoon Network, ¡Viva Calavera! was responsible for generating scripts, storyboards and all conceptual design elements.

The series is strongly influenced by wrestling, Mexican culture, Japanese anime and American animation.

The character design in this series is inspired by Japanese character design, adapted to a young audience, and fitting the narrative situations conceived for the series. The richness of the wrestling world made it easy to find inspiration for the catalog of heroes and villains in the series.

Unique
locations

The world in which the series is set is based on Mexico City and the architectural syncretism between pre-Hispanic, colonial and modern architecture, which plays a leading role in the design of the city. In addition, it also has elements of Mexican functionalism, but with very clear inspirations in the form, order, cleanliness and presence of lakes and canals of the pre-Hispanic era. Of course, the color that distinguishes Mexico in reality and in the imaginary are present. With all this, we seek to bring to life a new sensibility about what Mexico is, from a contemporary and urban reality.

The animation of the series is a hybrid between animation with highly modifiable rigs and frame by frame animation. This style acomplishes impactful effects in both action and comedy, while maintaining great attention to layout acheiving spectacular images.
